Specimen Requirements (Tube Type)
○ Plasma: EDTA-blood tube (lavender top)
○ Urine: sterile container (min volume 0.5 mL)
Collection Requirements
Plasma:
○ Decontaminate skin with 70% alcohol followed by iodine or chlorhexidine, collect at least 5 mL of blood
Urine:
○ Collect urine into a clean, sterile container. Transport to the microbiology laboratory ASAP.

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.
○ Plasma should be stored at room temperature (20-25˚C) after collection and submitted to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory ASAP.
○ Urine specimens should be stored at refrigeration temperature (2-8˚C) after collection.
