Ensure a minimum of 1-2 ml; maximum 1000 ml of specimen.
ADD: 3-5 units of heparin per 1 ml of fluid collected (approx. 1250 I.U.) and mix.

Note: If lymphoma is suspected, SAMPLE MUST BE RECEIVED FRESH (NO FIXATIVE)

Collection Containers – Tube Types
Use standard technique to obtain fluid from the site.
Transfer to a container and secure the lid to prevent leakage.
Indicate on the Cytology form/ requisition the following: Specimen site/body site/collection method/laterality

Hematology Crystal Analysis Instructions
Deliver as soon as possible after collection by Service Assistant/porter or pneumatic tube to the Cytology Wet Lab room 6-100-10 on the 6th Floor.
After hours delivery by Service Assistant/porter to the "After Hours" refrigerator located near the patient elevators.
