The fluids, or effusions, that are accepted for cell count and differential include: pleural or thoracentesis, pericardial, peritoneal (also known as paracentesis or ascitic fluid). Fluid analysis is used to: (1) differentiate transudates from exudates; (2) differentiate malignant from non-malignant effusions in patients with exudate effusions; and (3) diagnose specific causes of a serous effusion.
