○ Any genital, anal or oropharyngeal specimen and biopsies (including formalin-fixed tissue biopsies) from an individual with suspected human papilloma virus infection. No genital warts.

Other Information

○ This test is offered for reference and confirmation only when HPV genotyping is required to confirm a diagnosis of cancer or oropharyngeal lesions. This test is unsuitable for HPV cervical cancer screening.

○ This assay detects High Risk mucosal HPV types: 16, 18, 26, 30, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 73, 82, 85, 97 and other Low or Unknown Risk HPV types: 6, 11, 13, 32, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61, 62, 71, 72, 81, 83, 84, 86, 87, 89, 90, 91

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.

○ Specimens should be stored at room temperature (20-25˚C) after collection and transported to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory ASAP.

○ The specimen will be referred to the National Microbiology Laboratory for testing. Some PCR testing/genotyping is performed in house (see: HPV, human papillomavirus – detection)
