Serology ○ Whole blood ○ Serum

Other Information

○ Serology testing is not indicated for the diagnosis of acute infection. Following infection with HSV, it may take up to 3-6 months for HSV IgG antibodies to be detectable in serum/blood.
○ HSV-2 Type Specific IgG assay is indicated for testing sexually active adults or expectant mothers to aid in determining evidence of prior infection with HSV-2 virus.

○ Whole blood/serum: Serum separator tubes (clotted blood)

Serum:
○ Decontaminate skin with 70% alcohol followed by iodine or chlorhexidine, collect at least 5 mL of blood in appropriate container (neonatal blood min 0.5mL)

○ Serology: up to 5 days

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.

○ Specimens should be stored and transported to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory at refrigeration (2-8˚C) temperature immediately after collection.

○ The laboratory will refer the original specimen to the Public Health Ontario Laboratory for serology testing.
