Bacteriology
○ Fresh specimen (5 mL) ○ Concentrate (0.5 mL) ○ Formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) block and corresponding H&E stained slide with the suspected area marked on the slide

Other Information

○ AFB smear-negative specimens must be requested within 72h of the date the specimen was received to ensure specimen integrity.
○ FFPE should only be submitted when there is a strong suspicion of tuberculosis disease clinically and epidemiologically and there is evidence on histopathological examination of the tissue.
○ PCR will automatically be performed on all AFB smear-positive specimens from new, untreated patients or patients who have no AFB positive cultures for the past 3 years.

○ Fresh samples: 4 days from receipt by PHOL
○ FFPE samples: up to 10 business days

YES – for AFB negative specimens only

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.

○ Fresh specimens should be stored at refrigeration temperature (2-8˚C) after collection if transport is delayed more than one hour. Transport to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory ASAP after collection.

○ The specimen will be referred to the Public Health Ontario Laboratory for testing.

○ FFPE samples should be sent directly from pathology to Public Health Ontario Laboratory for testing
