Other Information

○ Indicate clinical information (e.g. recent travel history, refugee or new immigrant (and country), consumption of any uncooked food products, eosinophilia, HIV, immunocompromised, has a critical illness or was admitted to ICU, or had a previous parasitic infection.

○ Whole blood/serum: serum separator tube (clotted blood) (min volume 5 mL)
○ Worm: Sterile container


Whole blood/serum (serology)
○ Decontaminate skin with 70% alcohol followed by iodine or chlorhexidine, collect at least 5 mL of blood into appropriate container

Worm identification
○ Remove worm or proglottids and place into sterile container

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.

○ Specimen should be kept at room temperature (20-25˚C) after collection and transported to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory ASAP

○ The specimen will be referred to the Public Health Ontario Laboratory for testing. PHOL will refer the serology to NRCP.
