Bacteriology
○ Brain tissue ○ Surgical or other biopsy material ○ CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)

Other Information

○ If infection with this organism is suspected, its name should be included under “Test Description” on the requisition

○ Indicate appropriate clinical information on the requisition (e.g. travel history or country of origin if refugee, returned traveller or recent immigrant, eosinophilia, HIV, immunocompromise, critical illness, admitted to ICU or previous parasite infection

○ Brain tissue, other biopsy material: sterile container with small amount of saline
○ CSF: sterile container


Brain tissue, other biopsy material
○ Collect at least 5-10 mm3 tissue aseptically using surgical technique. Place in a clean, sterile container with a small amount of sterile saline.

CSF:
○ Decontaminate skin, collect at least 0.5 mL of CSF by lumbar puncture into sterile container

○ Tissue: Up to 3 days from receipt at PHO Laboratory
○ CSF: Up to 1 day from receipt at PHO Laboratory

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.

○ Specimens should be stored and transported to the UHN/SH Microbiology Laboratory at room temperature (20-25˚C) ASAP after collection.

○ The specimen will be referred to Public Health Ontario Laboratory for testing
