This test is used for the preparation of bone marrow, tissues, fine needles aspirates, and body fluids into a representative sample for introduction into the flow cytometer for immunophenotypic analysis.

Bone Marrow, Tissues and Fine Needle Aspirates (FNA), Body fluids including CSF.

Bone marrow 1-2 mL of a proper bone marrow specimen.

Bone marrow samples are EDTA Lavender Tube however heparin is also acceptable but not routinely used. Tissue and FNA are collected and to be preserved in RPMI-1640 nutrient medium. Body fluids are collected into a clean container.

Bone marrow is kept at room temperature. Tissues and FNA and fluids can be transported at room temperature and are stored in refrigeration if not processed immediately.

Bone marrow is processed as soon as possible. Tissues and FNA can be stored for 72 hours refrigeratied with RPMI-1640. Body fluids are processed as soon as possible and stored in refridge if processing is delayed.

Bone marrow specimens that are >24 hours old, wrong anticoagualnt, hemolysed, underfilled, hot or cold, refridgerated or clotted WILL NOT BE REJECTED. Tissue and FNA that are >72 hours old wrong preservative, hot or cold, WILL NOT BE REJECTED. Body fluids that are clotted, room temperature, or in an anticoagualnet WILL NOT BE REJECTED.

Monday to Friday and no later than 3 pm on Fridays. There is no Flow Cytometry testing on weekends and statutory holidays. If tissue, fine needle aspiration, or body fluid specimens arrive after our cut-off time, they are to be refrigerated until the next flow work day. Bone marrow to be stored at room temperature.

Diagnosis and/or indication of type of hematological pathology on the requistion will help with testing procedure.

B and T cells flow panels are run and depening on results the hematopathologist may order follow up flow panels for further immunophenotypic investigation.

Bone marrow collection is booked through the hematoogy laboratory.
