Serologic detection of Rubella virus antibodies and avidity when clinically indicated
Microbiology
Serology
○ Whole blood
○ Serum
Other Information
○ If Rubella infection is suspected, collect additional samples for PCR testing. See Rubella – PCR
○ Rubella IgG testing will be performed by PHO laboratory on all requests for immunity serology (e.g. prenatal screening) ○ Rubella IgG and IgM testing will be performed on diagnostic requests with relevant clinical information ○ Collect the acute sample within 7 days after the onset of rash. Collect the convalescent 7-10 days after the acute. ○ For avidity testing, serum needs to be positive for Rubella IgG.
○ Serum separator tube (clotted blood)
○ Decontaminate skin with 70% alcohol followed by iodine or chlorhexidine, collect at least 5 mL of blood ○ Neonates: a minimum of 1 mL; if ordered as part of a TORCH screen, 2.5 mL of blood is sufficient for all serology tests
