Normal adult hemoglobin consists of Hb A (more than 95%) and Hb A2 (2.5 - 3.5%) and will demonstrate a negative sickle screen. Hemoglobin S is due to a structural variant of hemoglobin and demonstrates a positive sickle screen whether the patient is of the disease or of the trait variety. Note: This test should not be used for patients less than 6 months of age.

Whole Blood (EDTA)

1 mL, test can be done on CBC tube, no extra tube is required if the CBC is ordered at the same time

It may be used for 45 days when stored tightly capped at 2-8°C
