Identification of Sporothrix species (sporotrichosis) in clinical specimens

○ Any specimen sent for routine fungal culture (See: Fungi – culture)
○ Blood (collected in Isolator tube)
Other Information
○ Please notify the laboratory immediately if a dimorphic fungus is suspected in any specimen that will be processed for bacterial or fungal culture ○ Blood culture specimens with a request for dimorphic fungal culture that are received in BacT/Alert blood culture bottles will only be processed for routine culture
○ Swabs are not acceptable specimens for fungal culture
○ Blood: Wampole Isolator10 tube (adult patient only) (min volume 10 mL) ○ Other specimen as appropriate with respective collection devices (See: Fungi – culture)
○ With aseptic technique, collect 10 mL of blood into a clean, sterile syringe. Transfer the blood into an Isolator10 microbial tube

○ Label specimen container. Place specimens in biohazard bag and seal.
○ Specimens that are potentially contaminated with commensal bacteria should be stored at refrigeration temperature (2-8C˚) EXCEPT CSF which should be kept at room temperature (20-25˚C). Isolator10 tubes can be held at room temperature for up to 24 hours if a delay in transport is anticipated.
○ Transport specimen to laboratory within 2h of collection.
