Note: The first sputum of the morning is best.
A series of three early morning deep cough specimens (consecutive days) is the most sensitive.
Specimens consisting only of saliva are considered unsatisfactory.

Patients should clean their teeth and mouth prior to obtaining the specimen.
Patient collection instructions:
1. Collect the specimen in the morning before eating.
2. Rinse mouth with water.
3. COUGH DEEPLY from the lungs and deposit the sputum directly into the specimen container.

DO NOT spit into the container without a DEEP COUGH FIRST.
